The Wondong Catholic Church was built in 1913. It was rebuilt in 1954 when its buildings were burnt down during the Korean War
It is well preserved and almost identical to the original model.
The Wondong Catholic Cathedral is also a symbol of the democratic movement in the Wonju area during the dark days of democracy in the 1970s.
Bishop Jihakseon declared the original reform as a place that opposed the Yushin system with the pride of democratizing the people, creating a great change in the nation’s modern and contemporary history.
The church at Wondong has a Gothic style. It was built with a long, bare dome with a bell tower.
It is registered as a modern cultural heritage site in Korea and is historically and architecturally significant.
