It is the main gate of Seoul, the national treasure No. 1, Sungnyemun. It was built in 1396 along with the castle of Hanyang, which served as the south gate and main gate of Hanyang city. As the biggest gate in Joseon, it was the object of pride for the people of Seoul and for the local people, it was a place of great proud to visit once.
Sungnyemun Gate was preserved intact despite the great disturbance of the Japanese invasion, and when the fortress wall was torn down at both sides of the gate, the main gate of the 600-year-old Joseon Dynasty was closed.

Since then, Sungnyemun has been standing alone like a remote island surrounded by cars and tall buildings for more than 100 years. However, the Sungnyemun Gate was once again seen from a close distance in 2005 through the work of cleaning up the surrounding lanes and decorating parks. However, Sungnyemun was burned down to ashes due to fire in February 2008.
The restoration work was completed on April 29, 2013, and the recovery ceremony was held on May 4. It was made closer to the appearance of the Joseon Dynasty by restoring the left and right walls that were cut off during the Japanese colonial era.
