Changdeokgung Palace is a palace on the foot of Eungbong, which is a ridge to the left of Mt. Bukak.
Changdeokgung Palace, built east of Gyeongbokgung in 1405 (the 5th year of King Taejong’s reign), was used for a different purpose than neighboring Changgyeong Palace. As the two palaces were formed during the Joseon Dynasty, they were called Donggwol because they were called brother palaces.

In the process of building all palaces during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 (the 25th year of King Seonjo’s reign) and rebuilding those in Gwanghaegun, King Heungseon’s father played the role of serving as the king’s palace of Joseon until he rebuilt Gyeongbokgung Palace. It is also the palace where kings stayed for the longest period of Joseon palaces.

Changdeokgung represents the unique formative beauty of Korean palace architecture by arranging buildings according to the terrain of Eungbong.
Changdeokgung Palace, which is the best preserved palace of the original palaces from the Joseon Dynasty, is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 due to its harmonious arrangement with nature and Korean sentiment.
