Samtan Art Mine located in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, is a popular attraction site for many local and foreign tourists because of the recent Korean drama ‘Descendants of the Sun’. The drama filmed one of the scenes from inside the Samtan Art Mine that popularized the site. The Samtan Art Mine was once a formerly abandoned mine, however, it was transformed into a cultural and art complex for public visit.

Within the Samtan Art Mine, there is an art center, wine cave, restaurant, rail museum, and other additional facilities. The art center opened for the artists is composed of Samtan museum, a studio, modern museum, art work storage, and etc.

Connecting from the first level of the art center, when you follow the path, you will see a rail track that was utilized for the purpose of transporting coal in the past. Integrating art with the abandoned mine, the site has become a popular filming location for Korean TV shows such as ‘Running Man’ and ‘Phantom’.

■ Directions: From Gohan∙Sabuk Bus Terminal, take a bus bound for Sanggallae∙Manhang and get off at Motgol bus stop → Walk for about 450m to Samtan Art Mine. Alternatively, take a taxi from Gohan∙Sabuk Bus Terminal to Samtan Art Mine (estimated distance: about 7.5km).
