The Danoje Festival is a big holiday in Gangneung. Held on the occasion of Dano, the Gangneung Danoje Festival is a human drama for communication between God and nature as well as coexistence between human and nature, and among ourselves.

The festival took place during the Japanese colonial rule and left paramount records when Japan committed historical and cultural invasion. The record itself remained in existence even during the Korean War. To escape the eyes of oppressors, the festival was held on a small scale at the corner of the Jungang market, Namdaecheon stream, or Seongnam-dong by the elderly and female shamans.

Through historical reach, the Gangneung Danoje Festival has been passed down quite well to restore its original form. In November 2005, it was designated as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, as it is visited by more than a million tourists every year, and has become a cultural asset to be preserved.
