TRADITIONAL FOOD
Remember that Jeongseon Arirang Market is known for its medicinal herbs? Jeongseon Arirang Market offers more than that. There are several traditional foods to choose from.
From fried foods to dried snacks, everything is affordable and delicious! It will leave you saying 맛있는 (mashitneun) which means delicious and 싼(ssan) which means cheap in Korean. The Foreign Supporters went on a food trip at Jeongseon Arirang Market. It was a none-stop eating day since there was an abundance of food everywhere you look around the market. The food seems endless. The foreign supporters bought a bucket of chicken for just 10,000 won. Isn’t it affordable? The lady selling fried chicken was a smiley person. Many people were surrounding her stall in the market to buy a bucket of chicken from her. She was very accommodating and made sure everyone gets their generous amount of chicken.
The moment I saw this stand, I knew I had to buy one of this. This lady is selling a unique kind of hotteok which is a honey flavored Hotteok. I have never tasted Hotteok with honey in it before. The taste was beyond my expectations. It was so soft, chewy and tasty! It only cost 2,000 won to indulge yourself in this very sweet treat. If you buy two, you get a discount of 1,000 won. So if you buy four of this, you only need to pay 5,000 won instead of 8,000 won. That’s amazing! In the Korean traditional markets, it is common to have these discounts. That’s what makes Korean Traditional Markets unique from the rest.
Make sure not to miss to try Jeongseon’s Traditional Dishes. Gondrebap should be the first one on your list. Gondre is a wild vegetable that is full of nutrients while Bap means rice. Gondrebap is basically steamed rice with gondre. It is very famous in Jeongseon and Taebaek area as gondres in these areas are very soft and crispy. We ate this Gondrebap at a nearby Korean restaurant along Jeongseon Arirang Traditional Market.
There was still some rice left sticking onto the bowl. We had to pour warm green tea into the bowl then cover it with the lid for a while. After a few seconds, we scrubbed the sides of the bowl to get the rice. Now talk about the mixture of the flavors of the green tea and the Gondrebap. Doesn’t it strike you curiosity on how it would taste like? A definite must try food at the Jeongseon County!
